After shooting and permanently paralyzing his daughter Barbara (a.k.a. Batgirl), the Joker kidnaps the commissioner and attacks his mind in hopes of breaking the man. But refusing to give up, Gordon maintains his sanity with the help of Batman in an effort to best the madman.
In the pantheon of writers who have elevated and established the graphic novel to the art form it is considered today, Frank Miller and Alan Moore stand on top. It is only fitting, then, that the three greatest Batman stories were written by them. Frank Miller created Batman: Year One and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Alan Moore together with artist Brian Bolland, created Batman: The Killing Joke, all published by DC Comics, of course. The Killing Joke, published in 1998, is one of the most influential one-shot stories ever written with a permanent imprint not only on mainstream Batman continuity but on the modern Batman films that have been produced since: Tim Burton has averred it was a major influence on his film adaptation of Batman (with the Jack Nicholson Joker); and of course it is already a part of pop lore that Christopher Nolan used it as reference for his film reboot of the Batman saga, Batman Begins and for its sequel The Dark Knight with actor Heath Ledger given a copy in his preparation for the role of Joker in the latter.

Many--critics and fanboys alike--consider this the 3rd greatest Batman story--some even swear it is the greatest--after the above two mentioned. In 2008 it was reprinted in a deluxe hardcover edition. This Deluxe Edition features new coloring by Brian Bolland, meant to illustrate his original intentions for the book, with more somber, realistic, and subdued colors than the intensely-colored original. Also included in the de luxe edition is a colored version of Bolland's "An Innocent Guy" (originally published in Batman: Black & White), an introduction by Tim Sale, and an epilogue by Bolland. This post, then, would not be complete unless it includes the digital scans of both the original 1998 softcover and the 2008 de luxe hardcover editions and of course that's what I have for you.
