Siege #1 (of 4)

Siege #1 (of 4)
CBR | Feb 2010 | 38 Pages | 19 MB
Marvel begins Siege, an event that they've branded as "Seven Years In The Making." It's hard to refute the claim as, Secret Invasion aside, Marvel has done a very fine job at knitting its entire line together into a cohesive and propelling forward narrative. This is no doubt helped by outstanding creative work done in titles like Thor, Iron Man and Captain America--where independent storylines are maintained yet somehow conforming to a coherent whole--from its new breed of talented and imaginative creative teams. For this title that officially starts the event, writer Brian Michael Bendis' tendency to become overbearing is more than counterbalanced by Olivier Coipel, Mark Morales and Laura Martin's tremendous work. While this issue may not be the biggest "Event" book around, it certainly is one of the best-looking. It also signals the start of a major shift in the Marvel Universe's status quo.

Beginning with the ravaging affects of Avengers Disassembled and following the aftermaths of House of M, Civil War and Secret Invasion, culminating with the evil Reign of Norman Osborn, the Marvel Universe has been left with its greatest villains holding more power and control than ever before.

On the brink of madness, Osborn, in his final bid to take total control, targets the final obstacle in his mission...Asgard. Events are set in motion forcing our heroes to put aside the deep rifts that have grown over the past seven years.

Opposing them stand a horde of evil that has begun to take down the gods of the Golden Realm! SIEGE will rock the foundations of every super hero, villain and team in the Marvel Universe. As an era ends, one word will ring above all others...'SIEGE.'

Siege: Storming Asgard - Heroes & Villains #1 (One-Shot)

Siege: Storming Asgard - Heroes & Villains #1 (One-Shot)
CBR | Feb 2010 | 31 Pages | 16.4 MB
Siege: Storming Of Asgard Heroes And Villains #1 is a one-shot that goes over in more detail about all of the players in Marvel Comics' The Siege event. The bios are purportedly framed and written by H.A.M.M.E.R. agents. This comic actually has all the info one needs to be fully briefed about all the details of the recent happenings of the Marvel Universe, such as the White Queen and Namor teaming up and rebelling against Normal Osborn, or how Steve Rogers' return is not publicly known yet, or that there are 5 Avengers teams (sorry if I've spoiled things). My gripe is that this one-shot should have been released before all other issues on the Siege event. Other than that, it may actually help in sorting out all the Siege-related titles, miniseries and crossovers that have been or will be, published.

Since the shocking finale of SECRET INVASION vaulted him to national prominence and a newfound respect, Norman Osborn has been slowly organizing his power base, promoting his minions, eliminating his enemies – and losing his sanity. Now, as he meets with the uber-powerful elite of the Cabal – Doctor Doom, Loki and the Hood – the final stages of his Dark Reign are about to be put into fruition: the taking of Asgard. Some might say such a plan is insane. And when you're dealing with the former and possibly future Green Goblin, we're not going to necessarily disagree with you!

SIEGE: STORMING ASGARD – HEROES & VILLIANS takes you inside the careful planning behind Osborn's crusade to take the kingdom of Thor off the board. Who are the featured players in the saga, how did we get here, and what are the many contingencies in this operation? With insider character bios and commentary from the creators behind the Dark Siege, this will make essential reading for kicking off the event in style!

Siege: The Cabal #1 (One-Shot)

Siege: The Cabal #1 (One-Shot)
CBR | Jan 2010 | 31 Pages | 35.5 MB
THE SIEGE STARTS HERE!! Remember when you were first introduced to the Cabal, the gathering of the most sinister members of the Marvel Universe, and you said to yourself: Well, that's going to blow up in everyone's face! Well, you were right and it happens right here!! Norman Osborn faces off with Doctor Doom and his mysterious threat to Doom is revealed. All of this is setting the stage for next month's explosive event: SIEGE! By: Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Lark, David Finch

Yes, indeed, The Siege starts with this one-shot. And okay... okay, for this I take back what I said earlier in my Dark Avengers Annual #1(2010) post about Brian Michael Bendis making a mess of things; obviously when you've had seven years to think things over (The Siege which is of course the next big event in the Marvel Universe is being hyped as "seven years in the making") you'd have things properly put in place. This one-shot is the prologue for The Siege and quite rightly sets the tone. From the very first panels the story grabs you by the gut and manages to hold you there, so that you can't wait for the subsequent Siege titles and series tie-ins.

Let's talk about the principal character Norman Osborn. Granted that he is a brilliant scientist in his own right--and a brilliant tactician and strategist, to have achieved what he has achieved and to get where he is now. But he is no Reed Richards. When you take on Dr. Doom and his new-found powers in the current continuity head-on you better be more than diabolical--you have to be as superlative as Mr. Fantastic, and then some. And between the God of Mischief who leeringly outlines for Norman Osborn the steps he has to take and that embedded persona from his past inside his head, well, you have to be really dumb not to suspect Norman's in for a fall. The fun, though, is in reading, and learning, and waiting how all this is going to come about. At first I thought including a preview into the main storyline title series The Siege #1 would be a giveaway; but in context of all that's going to happen, I can't wait for that first issue to which this one-shot segues. Bendis is in fine form here, and so are the art team. Oh and one other thing: at the last page is the checklist for the Siege crossover event of 2010.
